If you are a parent, you know you have to help your child learn healthy habits that (hopefully) will stick with them for life. And we think that athletics should be at the top of your list, as encouraging a child to play a sport can have lasting benefits.

When you are encouraging a child to play a sport, you aren’t just teaching them about the game. They are learning lots of other life lessons along the way.

Here are five reasons you should be encouraging a child to play a sport.

  1. Team work: When your child plays on a team, they learn how to work with others to succeed – or fail. They learn about their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of others. And they learn how to adapt and collaborate.
  2. Relationships: Chances are, your child has friends in the neighborhood or at school, but encouraging your child to branch out and make friends in different places is a good thing – especially in the rocky tween and teen years. Sports is a great way to make friends – not only for your child but for your family as well!
  3. Leadership and character: Athletics can help your child develop leadership skills, as they learn to speak up, lead drills or listen to their teammates and coaches. They will also learn how to win humbly and lose graciously (we hope!) and that they win as a team or lose as a team.
  4. Movement for fun. Sports are great to set your child up for a lifetime of loving to move their bodies. They will develop skills that can be useful for their entire lives, such as core strength, flexibility and set them up for an active, healthy life. Which leads us to the last reason, which is…
  5. Fun! Sports are fun. We truly believe there is a sport for everyone, whether it is an individual or team sport, competitive or recreational. Movement is medicine and it can also be a way to find joy, release stress, spend time with friends and family and build confidence.
